About the Course
Outdoor First Aid differs from urban-based first aid in that it may necessitate care of a patient for long periods before help arrives. It also means that access to specialised equipment may be unavailable and that improvisation is needed. Handling an outdoor first aid situation may also require a good understanding and practical application of accident management.
Your Outdoor First Aid Course will focus not only on first aid procedures but also on leadership and group control.
Your course facilitator(s) will be qualified to Pre-Hospital Emergency Care and NZ Resuscitation Council Instructor level and will be experienced outdoor professionals. They will be there to facilitate learning and will be wanting to have fun while doing so.
Your course will consist of a mixture of instruction, facilitated discussion and outdoor scenarios. Scenario-based learning involves working with other people, both patients and team members, and then debriefing what happened. Scenarios are designed to maximise learning - not to show you what you don't know. Practical and written assessments will occur over both days of the course.
To achieve the Outdoor First Aid Certificate you must show competency in all assessments. Details of what constitutes competency in each assessment will be clearly communicated to you before assessment.
As this is a certificated course, the certificate can only be issued upon FULL attendance of the ENTIRE course.
"I recently attended one of your Outdoor First Aid courses held at our school. At the time I expressed my thanks to you as it was one of the most useful First Aid courses I have ever attended. At the year 9 camp, while on our tramp down from the Pinnacles Hut, one of our parents fell. It was later diagnosed as a severe break to the ankle, literally tearing the whole joint from its socket. I felt as a direct result of the First Aid course we were able to handle the whole situation relatively smoothly. The situation was not dissimilar to the scenarios we had practised at the school, that preparation really came in useful when the real event occurred. Many thanks!"
